Detectives and Thieves in Asia III:
Bao Zheng Wisely Executes Lu Zhailang

Original text composed by Wang Xingbei
Illustrated by Chen Lüping

Translated from the Chinese by Károly Jakabfy

A portrait of Bao Zheng

What follows is a translation of a short picturebook (or lianhuanhua 连环画 ), telling a story of Judge Bao. The booklet itself is intended primarily for the entertainment of children, as evidenced by the fact that I have purchased a copy of it (alongside multiple other Judge Bao stories in a similar format) at the children's books section of the Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore in Beijing. The edition I purchased is the sixth printing of a 2021 edition by the Shanghai People's Art Publishing Company (Shanghai Renmin Meishu Chubanshe 上海人民美术出版社), but versions of the booklet date back to at least the 80s, originally published in Jiangnan 江南. Though such picturebooks telling stories in an easy to understand fashion have been popular in places like Shanghai since the turn of the 20th century, where people could rent out these books in small alleyway libraries. So the printing is new, the edition is really not, and the format itself is even older.

Since the illustrations compose the majority of the publication, I had no choice but to include them with my translation. For this I scanned my own copy of the booklet. I publish the illustrations here without the Chinese text to make the article feel less cluttered. If the reader is interested in the Chinese text, a copy of it is available with on Anna's Archive, albeit in a poorly digitalised format. (Which is why I opted for scanning the illustrations of my own copy.)
The scans didn't always turn out to be perfectly flat. I ask the viewer to excuse me for this shortcoming, but due to no better available tools than a phone I was unable to create a better a digital version on my own.
