Bao Zheng Wisely Executes Lu Zhailang
包公智斩鲁斋郎

A summary of the plot: During the Song Dynasty, a member of the imperial family by the name of Lu Zhailang abused his power and position and ran amuck. He used force to take the wife of Li Four. With no way to report this, Li fainted from anxiety. His life was saved by a minor official by the name of Zhang Gui. Not long after, Lu Zhailang took a liking to Zhang Gui's wife too. Rather than live with the shame, the lady threw herself in the well and perished. Zhang and Li, in their just anger took their complaints to Bao Zheng. Bao Zheng knew that Lu Zhailang enjoys the favour of the emperor, and so he had to think hard to come up with a plan to have Lu executed. As his candle's wax poured onto the paper of his memorial, he got an idea: If he replaces Lu Zhailang's name, he can conceal the culprit's identity from the emperor! Afterwards he took his brush up again, wrote Lu's name back and after the proper examination of the case, Lu Zhailang ended up losing his head!

During the Song period, in the city of Kaifeng, the emperor had an uncle by the name of Lu Zhailang. He was fully conscious that he was a relative of the emperor, and so he spent all day roaming the streets of the city, taking the goods and belongings of others through tricks and intimidation. There was not one good thing anyone could say about him. Among the people there was not a person who didn't fear his name, or revile him from the depths of their heart.

One spring, Lu, accompanied by his right-hand man Wang Long, and his servants, saddled up and rode out into the countryside to spend some time. As he rode he cracked his whip and observed the flowers without a care in the world.

The sunset shone like a fire in the distance, the sky was about to start darkening, Lu was tired of traveling and only cared about whipping his horse until he reached the end of the road. They rode like madmen, flying down the road, and whoever among the people happened to have a lick of luck did their best to get out of his way.

The daughter and son of the silversmith Li Four, called Jiao'er and Xitong, were playing in front of the store. His wife, Lady Zhang saw the almost flying horses, and so she rushed outside and grabbed a child with one hand each.

After Lady Zhang composed herself, she saw a group led by a splendidly dressed man who looked like an official. The man turned his gaze towards her. Lady Zhang blushed, and with sunken head returned to the store with Jiao'er and Xiaotong.

Lu returned to his office, but his mind was constantly on the woman he saw in front of the silversmith's shop. She didn't look half bad, but the horse was galloping too fast to see her perfectly. He asked Wang Long, who returned a fawning smile. He was ready to do anything to please his master!

" That's the wife of the silversmith Li Four. She's quite the beauty! If your highness so desires, your servant will have the matter arranged!"

Lu felt a burning desire to take the woman at once and have his way with her. Wang Long leaned over to his lord's ears and gently whispered something, which caused the imperial uncle to break out in laughter, replying "Great plan! Great plan!"

The next morning, imperial uncle Lu assembled his followers and together with Wang Long went to the shop of Li Four as planned. As soon as they were inside the gates, Wang started shouting. This frightened and confused Li, for he had no idea who would break the law of the land like this.

"The imperial uncle has arrived!"

On the sign it says: "Jewelry. Carefully made silver and gold wares."

After they all sat down, Lu told Wang to take out a silver pot and ask Li Four, to fix it, and then give him twenty pieces of silver as a reward. Li took the pot, but dared not to take the reward.

"How come you don't take the reward the Lord has allotted you? Quick, take it!"
"A lowly person such as I dares not to take so much silver!"
