Judge Bao immediately took up the case
and commenced the interrogations. The yamen's workers
jointly shouted and took them inside to kneel in front
of Judge Bao. Judge Bao questioned them, and in his
anger he slammed his desk. He was determined to free
the people from this scourge. |
Judge Bao accepted their complaint, and
returned Xitong and Jiao'er to Li Four and his wife.
He then ordered the examination of Lady Li's body. He
also told Zhang Gui to have a coffin made. They all
bowed gratefully, and then set off for their homes. |
While they were off to lodge a complaint
to Judge Bao, Wang Long and his threats returned. To
their surprise they found the door open, and the rooms
empty. Wang Long shouted in rage, but nobody replied. |
Wang Long waited a short while for a
response, and after realizing nobody will reply, he
set off to examine the house. In the back garden they
found the body of Lady Li, and upon seeing it, they
ran off covering their heads, sneaking off like rats.

That night, Judge Bao penned a memorial
to the emperor, in which he asked him to execute Lu
Zhailang. He just finished writing the name of Lu
Zhailang, when his brush suddenly stopped. He was
hesitant. |
Lu Zhailang is a relative of the emperor,
his power and influence reaches the Heavens. It's
unlikely that the emperor will accept this memorial,
and it'll likely draw the ire of the imperial
relatives. Judge Bao kept thinking about the matter
but could not come up with a solution. |
The rooster crowed for the third time,
but Judge Bao was still thinking by his candle. In his
heart he was both angry and anxious. He picked up the
memorial and burned it with the candle's fire. |
He quickly relighted the candle, and he
gazed upon the mostly burned memorial, when suddenly,
inspiration struck and he broke out in a massive fit
of laughter. |
The three characters originally written
on the memorial saying "Lu Zhailang" mostly burned up,
and the character fragment left just said "fish". On
the inside, Judge Bao was really happy. If he leaves
out a few strokes from the name of Lu Zhailang, he
gets the name, Yu Qiji, which would circumvent the
first obstacle. On the paper: The evil tyrant by the
name of Lu Zhailang |
By the time the emperor learns what
happened, it'll be too late and he will have no
alternative but to uphold the laws of the land and not
intervene any further. After he thought through all of
this carefully, he picked up his brush again and
quickly re-wrote the memorial, and then waited for the
emperor to hold an audience, where he could get his
blessing. |
